AW23: HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE

Model wearing the Sartre Skirt with the Narcisuss Scarf

The 'Hell is Other People' collection takes inspiration from Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1944 existentialist play ‘Huis Clos’. Sartre believed that as long as we experience 'the look' the ever present gaze of others we cannot be agents of our own lives. In the end there is no exit, no escaping each other and no escaping the truth.

The jumpers and scarves are handcrafted in Hawick Scotland, the cardigans are knitted in Spain and our skirts are constructed in England. The three new skirts designs were originally screen printed in London, each featuring a unique print inspired by the line from Jean-Paul Satre’s Huis Clos "So this is hell."

Sartre takes the opinion that hell can be felt in the most affluent of living rooms and in the company of people who seem decent.

The Sartre skirt is screen printed with vintage French fabric, ripped and splintered across the asymmetrical design that cuts above and below the knee.

The No Exit slit skirt depicts an abstract living room in dark indigo and black. Influenced by the French Second Empire decor in the room Joseph, Inèz and Estelle are damned to spend eternity in, slowly becoming each others torturers.

Finally the So This Is Hell straight skirt's print is a sourced vintage fabric, screenprinted and reimagined in contrasting sunny scarlet and apricot.
