HADES FILM CLUB: SMITHEREENS (1982)

Shot on 16mm, the film is a gritty exploration of character and expression. It was the first independent American film to be in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and has been preserved in MoMA's collection.

We are drawn to the chaotic and quintessentially 1980s aesthetic of Smithereens, especially the quirkily bold costumes sported by the film’s protagonist Susan Berman. The film's costume designer Alison Lances purchased the costumes for the film (including the iconic checkerboard sunglasses) from various punk boutiques around New York to achieve ultimate authenticity.

Susan's style in Smithereens perfectly reflects the DIY and subversive aesthetics of punk. To achieve the 1980s NYC look, style bright jackets and skirts with ties, fishnets and waistcoats (or a fabulous knit). Don't forget your checkered sunglasses...
